Frequently asked questions

Lessons & support

Is every lesson taught by Mr Loh himself?

Yes. Every Formulyst class is personally taught by Mr Ryan Loh.

Does Formulyst have past student results or testimonials?

Formulyst welcomes its first students in January 2027, so there are no results from Formulyst students yet.

You can, however, read results and testimonials from Mr Loh’s former private tuition students and their parents, and messages from former school students he taught as an MOE Chemistry teacher.

What happens during a typical two-hour lesson?

Explanation and worked examples, then guided practice building to independent work, with exam-answering techniques throughout. Timed practices and mock papers follow the school assessment calendar. See The Formulyst Method.

What happens at the first lesson?

Before attending, students are invited to share their current school topics, areas of difficulty and a recent marked Chemistry assessment, if available.

During the lesson, short questions and practice help Mr Loh understand their foundations, reasoning and answering habits. Students take part in the regular class, and these observations help identify useful starting points for support.

Is this Pure Chemistry or Combined Science?

The 2027 classes are G3 Pure Chemistry (K324). A programme for the Chemistry component of G2/G3 Combined Science may be offered in future.

What is K324? I was expecting the Chemistry code 6092.

From 2027, the O-Level is replaced by the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC). K324 is the SEC subject code for G3 Pure Chemistry. The previous O-Level Chemistry code was 6092.

Formulyst’s Sec 3 and Sec 4 programmes follow the K324 syllabus.

Can students ask questions between lessons?

Yes. Students can WhatsApp Mr Loh with Chemistry questions between lessons. Students should include the question and their attempted working so Mr Loh can identify where support is needed. Replies are provided when available; questions requiring a longer explanation may be discussed in the next lesson.

Are materials included?

Yes. Lesson notes, summary notes, curated practice and Formulyst assessments are all included. There is no material fee.

My child’s school teaches the topics in a different order. Is that a problem?

Schools sequence the Chemistry syllabus differently. Formulyst follows the topic sequence that, from Mr Loh’s experience, best allows students to build competency, with each topic building on the ones before it.

Lessons are also planned to stay a few topics ahead, so that the syllabus is sufficiently covered before school assessments.

What happens during school WA and exam periods?

Lessons shift towards targeted revision, timed practice and mock papers. See Assessment preparation.

Attendance & holidays

Are there lessons on public holidays and during school holidays?

Yes. Lessons continue during school holidays and on public holidays, except during Formulyst’s scheduled breaks. Break dates are not billed.

Students unable to attend due to public-holiday observance may request to attend another weekly class at the same level, subject to availability and compatible lesson content.

If an alternative class cannot be arranged, the missed lesson remains chargeable. No additional replacement lesson, refund or lesson credit will be provided.

Public-holiday arrangements do not count towards the monthly allowance for personal absences.

What if my child misses a lesson?

Missed lessons remain chargeable. Students may request an alternative lesson arrangement up to once per month, subject to availability and compatible lesson content.

Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice where possible. For unexpected absences, such as illness, please inform Mr Loh as soon as possible.

Alternative arrangements are offered on a best-effort basis and are not guaranteed. Missed lessons are not automatically refunded or credited.

We are planning a family holiday. What should we do?

Longer trips are best planned during Formulyst’s scheduled breaks, which are not billed.

For trips at other times, please inform Mr Loh early. Your child will receive the notes and practice materials for missed lessons and may request an alternative lesson arrangement, subject to availability and the limit of one request per month.

Missed lessons remain chargeable.

What if my child is away for a while?

Travel and personal absences do not pause fees if your child wants to keep their place in the class. Families who prefer to stop payments during an extended absence can withdraw under the same notice arrangement and release the slot. Returning is subject to availability.

Published Formulyst breaks are not billed, and students keep their places.

Fees & enrolment

Can my child try a lesson before enrolling?

Yes, with an optional paid trial ($99, one two-hour lesson). A trial isn’t required: students can enrol directly using the enrolment form, which is also used to book a trial.

If your child continues, the trial counts as the first lesson of the first four-lesson block. See Join Formulyst.

How are fees paid?

Fees are payable in advance for each four-lesson block. An invoice with payment details is sent before each new block, and payment is due before its first lesson.

Payment is by PayNow or bank transfer. Payment details are included in the invoice.

If payment is still outstanding when the block begins, Formulyst may defer your child’s attendance until it is received.

How does withdrawal work? Are fees refundable?

Withdrawal needs one full four-lesson block’s notice. If notice is given during a block, the following block is your child’s final block, and it is paid in advance as usual. For example, with notice during Block A, your child completes Block A and Block B before the withdrawal takes effect.

Prepaid fees are generally non-refundable for student-initiated absences or withdrawals, subject to applicable law. Where Formulyst is unable to provide paid lessons, the affected lessons will be rescheduled or refunded as appropriate.
